 | 06:50 pm - For those of you who live in California The weekend of June 20 has been declared "SOS for our state parks" weekend, to protest the governator's threat to close 80 of our state parks. Of course doing this might save a few million, but a study from Cal State Sacramento estimates closing the parks would cost $4.32 BILLION/year in lost revenues.
Anyway, the SOS weekend invites everyone to go have a fun day out at your nearest state park (take along everyone you know!), and take lots of pictures of yourselves with signs declaring your support for state parks as well as a sign with the park name. Send your photos to the California State Parks Foundation (link above). They will make sure Sacramento gets the slide show.
We'll be out in force with our horses :-) Current Mood: determined

 | 05:37 pm - You go girl! Rachel Alexandra wins the 134th running of the Preakness. The first filly to win in 85 years! Mine That Bird gave a heroic performance, but couldn't quite catch her. They should totally get married and have amazing fast horse babies :-) Seriously, I love that no horses have broken down this season (fingers crossed for the Belmont), and that Rachael looks like a sturdy girl with some bone to her legs.
Rachel Maddow will be so proud ;-> Current Mood: pleased

 | 11:41 am - Silliness Is it wrong that I'm shipping this young couple from the Doonesbury cartoon strip?
He's a disabled Iraq vet and she's a freshman at MIT. They met online and have pretty much nothing in common except music and social awkwardness.
Today they're having their first argument. He wants a glass eye, while she prefers his pirate patch. His body and all, but I'm kind of with her on this.
Anyway, I want them to live happily ever after, and I'm starting to get cranky on days the strip isn't about them.
*sighs, and recites, "I have a life, that's the problem."* Current Mood: silly

 | 03:51 pm - Sad news Natasha Richardson suffered a serious head injury in a skiing accident in Canada.
Apparently she felt okay at first, but later started complaining of headache, so they took her to the hospital. Some reports are claiming that she's brain dead (from intracranial bleeding), which can happen, but it doesn't seem to be confirmed.
I sure hope it's not true and that she's going to be okay :-( Current Mood: sad

 | 02:45 pm - "The Prisoner" Those of you who remember "Secret Agent Man" and "The Prisoner" will have been saddened by the recent passing of actor Patrick McGoohan. I was cheered up a bit to find that classic episodes are available for viewing, FREE!, on AMC's website, here. Also: AMC is currently filming a new series of "The Prisoner," starring Sir Ian McKellen as Two! Something to look forward to later this year especially once we're all too broke to go out to the movies or hang on to our higher cable channel subscription

 | 11:13 am - Movie rec... Slumdog Millionaire is Danny Boyle's latest film. It's the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai, who ends up winning the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." His past unfolds in a series of flashbacks, which show how life has led him to know the answers to a set of seemingly random and unrelated trivia questions. There is also a love story, as he tries to find a childhood girlfriend. There's tragedy and comedy and even the obligatory Bollywood dance number over the final credits (just for dangermousie!). | 11:14 am - Great, just great Now our beloved Governator is proposing to tax veterinary services. Just what animal welfare and food safety needs: make vet care even more expensive and therefore an even less likely expenditure for the irresponsible and greedy.
Details of the plan and opposition to it are available at the California Veterinary Medical Association website.
Those of you who live in CA, please write to the Governor and your representative opposing this plan. Current Mood: cranky

 | 04:27 pm - Future Farmers of America If you can spare a few seconds, please go to this site: http://www.helpgrowyoursoup.com/ and click on the red barn. Campbell's Soup company will donate $1.00 per click (only one, per person, per day) to Future Farmers of America, an organization that promotes agricultural education for young people.
They're important in my area, as we are desperately trying to maintain and encourage local food production.

 | 06:03 pm - The Princes in the Tower I thought it was about time I posted something fannish, and have been meaning to do a pic spam of this 2005 BBC "docudrama" The Princes in the Tower for some time. We rented it from the library, and I was absolutely smitten.
To start off, here's the happy family:

Seated in front is King Henry VII of England. Standing on his right (our left) is his oldest son, Arthur, who will be the first husband of Catherine of Aragon. Next to Henry, sits his wife, Elizabeth of York, said to be the model for the queens in a deck of cards. Next to Elizabeth is the future King Henry VIII.
Standing behind them from left to right are: Margaret Beaufort (Henry's mother), Thomas Moore (as in "A Man For All Seasons"), John Argentine (who I'd never heard of before but who was on the scene for all the relevant events), The Ambassador from Aragon (there to see about the nuptials between Catherine and Arthur), Catherine Gordon (more about her later), and the Ambassador from Burgundy.

 | 10:43 pm - Okay, *this* made me laugh “I have to say if there’s a prettier state than North Carolina, I have not seen it yet,” he [Obama] said at a Democratic dinner here Saturday night. “I confess that I haven’t been to Alaska.”
The assembled Democrats lapped it up, cheering wildly as a man in the back of the room shouted, “You can see it from Russia.”
