08:35 pm - The White Queen, Starz
New War of the Roses drama based on Philippa Gregory's novels.

http://www.starz.com/originals/TheWhiteQueen

Quite enjoyable and overall I would recommend, but... Am I being unfair because the obvious zippers in the back of all her dresses really bothered me and threw me out of the story? I'm pretty sure they didn't have those in the 15th century.

02:33 pm - spam and spoofing
Apologies to anyone who's received spam from the email address associated with this journal. It appears I've been spoofed, rather than hacked. I'm not sure what, if anything, I can do about it -- but I'm open to suggestions!

12:13 pm - Not allowed to read comments?
WTF, LJ? Suddenly today I can see how many comments have been made on a post, but I can't see the comments. When I hopefully click "expand" (with or without the "check all" box checked), I get an error message.

Is it just me?

*ETA: Okay, now comments are visible. Weird!
*ETA: No comments issue back again :-( Yes, I do have a life, why do you ask?

11:38 am - Kimbari
I was deeply saddened to learn this morning that my friend, kimbari passed away over the weekend. I don't know any details, only that her husband posted information about her memorial service to her facebook page.

I knew Kim as a highly-talented fanfic writer, a fierce defender of social justice, and a devoted mother and grandmother. More recently, she had given up writing, and reconnected with her Catholic faith.

I will be in Rome next month, and had planned to send her something from the Vatican post office -- which I thought she would enjoy. Instead, although I do not share her beliefs, I will be lighting candles and saying little prayers for her.

RIP, Kim. You were much loved, and will be much missed.

05:10 pm - Deathly Hallows 2 (no spoilers)
To the person who thought it was appropriate to bring a baby to this movie... It wasn't. Making a big show of taking your screaming child out doesn't get you off the hook either, especially when you:

1. Only remove her as far as the doorway. We can all still hear the screaming!
2. Keep returning, only to have to leave again 5 minutes later.
3. Don't finally get the point and leave for good until someone has to loudly dress you down on behalf of an entire theater full of people who paid to see the movie not listen to your baby.

Baby sitters. Find one and use them.

Otherwise the movie was quite enjoyable, and was mostly loud and engaging enough to distract from the distraction.

06:24 pm - Manuscript style in Word 2007
You know how when you submit a story for publication (in a hard copy version, at any rate) each page, starting with page two is supposed to have a header with:

Author/Title/Page Number -- which is supposed to left justified.

How the fuck do you get Word 2007 to do that correctly? I can put the header on, and have it make the first page different (so headers start on page 2). I can also put page numbers on, but NOT as part of the header. Seems like there has to be a way...anybody know how?

TIA <3

05:06 pm - Questions for Kindle Peeps
I know several of you out there have them and are very pleased. I am starting to have some serious issues with eyestrain as well as RSI, from too much time spent squinting at a screen. This is not good: it's my work as well as my hobby :-/ So I'm looking for ways to do the tasks I need with less damage to my body.

So I have some specific questions for you:

Which model do you have, and why did you choose that one over the others?

Do you read pdfs on your kindle? (I have a LOT of scientific papers to read and they're all pdfs these days)

Does it work well for reading and annotating pdfs? Can you download your notes into a word processor?

Do you have the "read to me" and/or "voice guide" features? Do you use them? Do you like them?

Will it read any kind of document to you, including your own word files that you've uploaded?

Does it require special software on your computer to upload documents to your Kindle?

Thanks for any replies!!!

06:20 pm - Movies
Went to see "The King's Speech" last night. It was quite good and I would recommend it. Colin Firth and Geoffry Rush are so flashy that I suspect Guy Pearce's feckless Edward VIII will not get the attention he deserves.

Anyway, what I really wanted to squee about was the trailer for the upcoming version of Jane Eyre. I was pretty "meh" when I heard there was going to be a new version, but now I can't wait!

Is it just me? I'm not getting any LJ notifications anymore when someone responds to a post or comment I've made :-/ I checked my settings, and all the right things are ticked...
